Day Trips Near Rome
Most trips listed below are easily made by train or by bus. You can also
book through your hotel for package trips to sites in and around Rome.
Tivoli Gardens The Villa D'Este Gardens and overlooking Villa Adriana
30km east of Rome is world renown Eden with flowing waters and sculptures set
amongst nature's bounty. Catch the COTRAL bus at the Ponte Mammolo Metro stop
for a direct line to the gardens.
Via Appia The Appian Way was once the main road to Rome and the route along
which 6000 gladiators were crucified after a failed revolt led by Sparticus in 120 A.D.
The road is still cobbled and makes for an excellent hike through the countryside with a
few catacombs and ruins along the way.
Sperlonga The best beach near Rome along the Pontine coast. One hour by
COTRAL bus departing from the Fermi Metro stop.
Subiaco The mother of all monasteries founded by St. Benedictine in 494, the
monastery set the standard for all to follow. There are several interesting churches and
abbeys on the premises, but highlight is the sacred grotto where St. Benedictine first found
inspiration. COTRAL bus leaves from Ponte Mammolo Metro stop.
