Eating and Drinking in Rome
The Romans have always indulged in the finer things in life and food is no exception. Rome
has a wide variety of options sure to fit any budget. Ristorantes and Trattorias offer
traditional Italian dining and home style meals in a restaurant setting. Many chefs pride
themselves on using only the freshest ingredients and offer a daily special that is often
hard to beat. A full Roman meal might include up to seven courses, but many visitors
might just stick to a primo and secondo piatto and find themselves more than satisfied.
Soups, salad, pasta and meat dishes are guaranteed to be on the menu, as well as a wide
variety of rich Italian desserts ("dolce").
Most restaurants and trattorias offer Alfresco dining so look for a spot outside to enjoy all
the ambiance of Rome while you eat. Reservations may be required at popular restaurants,
and though dressing up is not usually necessary, wearing shorts might raise a few unwelcome
eyebrows. For the best mix of quality, value and ambiance in Rome head just over the Tiber
River to the Trastevere neighborhood, filled with some of the city's best and oldest dining
establishments.
At the casual end of the spectrum, cafes, pizzerias and osterias (taverns) offer
affordable meals in a relaxed setting. Roman pizza is thin and crispy and can be
served by the slice when you're just looking for a snack.
Of course, because Rome is an international city, you can find whatever your heart desires:
from Chinese to Burger King. Just don't expect it to taste necessarily like home.
