Transportation to Rome

Rome is a major hub easily within reach from most destinations. Rome's Metro is the easiest and fastest way to get around the city center.

Arriving by Air
Leonardo da Vinci Airport (FCO) (www.adr.it) is Rome's main international airport, located 30 km southwest of the city in the suburb of Fiumicino. A direct train makes for easy connections to Termini Station in central Rome. Trains depart every 30 minutes and cost € 9.50 for a one way fare. Purchase your ticket at one of the machines located in the airport train terminal. Trains to surrounding areas including Trastevere, Ostiense, and Tiburtina are also available. Taxis to the city center cost about € 50 if you're lucky.

Ciampino (CIA)) is Rome's secondary airport, serving mainly charter carriers, as well as EasyJet and RyanAir. The airport is located 15km from the city center. A COTRAL shuttle bus takes you directly to the central Metro Line A at Anagnina Station with easy connects to the rest of the city.

Arrival by Train
The main train station in Rome is Termini Station in the city center. The other major stations are Tiburtina, Trastevere and Ostiense, all within easy reach of the city center by metro. Trenitalia is the primary rail company in Italy with convenient connections throughout the country. Be sure to make reservations for longer trips over 100 km (Naples, Florence, Venice, etc.). For day trips around Rome, Trenitalia offers a discounted kilometrico ticket valid for trips within 100km of the city. Remember to validate all tickets before boarding the train at the time stamp machines located on all track platforms.

Arriving By Bus
Most long distance buses arrive at Tiburtina Station Rail and Bus Station or at the Anagnina Metro station. COTRAL bus is the main bus operator for the region.

Arriving by Car
Major routes to Rome include A1 from the north (Venice, Florence), and Route A2 from the south (Naples). All roads connect to the GRA ring encircling the city (Grande Raccordo Anulare). Needless to say, driving in Italy is hectic and not recommended. Parking in Rome is expensive and hard to find. Most hotels have reserved spaces for their guest in local garages, but you should call beforehand to make sure. If you're looking for free parking outside the city center, don't be surprised if you're approached by an unofficial "parking attendant." Usually it's just best to tip one or two Euros for piece of mind that your car will still be there when you get back.

Getting Around Rome Central Rome is easily covered on foot, but you should take advantage of public transportation (especially on hot days) to help conserve your energy and make the most of your time. The best way to get around Rome is by metro. Metro Line A running North-South and Line B running East-West are the two primary metro lines in the city. All tickets are € 1 for a one way fare and are valid for up to one hour on all trams, buses and metro lines. 24-hour, 48-hour and 72-hour passes are also available. The metro runs until just after midnight 365 days a year. You can find a map of the Rome Metro here.

Buses run regularly throughout the city though schedules vary depending on the day of the week.
